Eye Movement (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is widely recognized as an effective form of treatment for anxiety and trauma-related issues. EMDR has been endorsed and recognized by both the American Psychiatric Association and the Department of Defense as an effective treatment method and it has been backed up by a multitude of empirical studies. The focus of EMDR is to deal with difficult experiences from the past, the current situations that trigger them and the positive experiences necessary to adapt to future change.
We offer a completely qualified and trained Level II EMDR provider and have used this approach effectively to help people manage their anxiety and trauma-related problems. Because of our extensive experience with this treatment method, we strongly recommend it for these kinds of issues. The APA’s Division 12 Task Force on Research Supported Treatments has also endorsed it with the “Strong Research Support” label, so we know that it’s not just personal experience which has shown this method to be effective.
EMDR uses a variety of psychotherapy elements in a structured sequence of phases. During the treatment, you will be asked to call on negative past experiences and alternative positive thoughts. Using external stimuli—like moving the eyes back and forth to follow an object— we will work on relieving the pain that trauma and anxiety bring and focus on building upon the positive thoughts to work towards a better, more comfortable life experience for you.
It might sound strange, but studies show that it’s effective. If you are unfamiliar with EMDR but are experiencing the effects of trauma and anxiety, we encourage you to reach out to me with your questions and concerns. I would be happy to set up a free initial consultation and meet with you in my office in Boulder, Colorado to discuss the best therapeutic route for you!
